College of Oceanography and Environment of Science

The
College of Oceanography and Environment of science of Xiamen
University has under it 6 divisions of the Department of Oceanography,
the Institute of Subtropical Oceanography, the Department
of Environmental Science and Engineering, the Environmental
Science Research Center, a key lab for Marine Environmental
Science under the Ministry of Education, Xiamen University,
and the International Training Center for Coastal Sustainable
Development in Xiamen. At present, the college has a post-doctoral
station in Oceanography, and offers doctoral programs in primary
discipline of Oceanography and in the discipline of Environmental
Science, and master programs in the relevant disciplines.
The college has distinguished professorships sponsored by
"Changjiang Scholar Award Program" in Marine Biology,
Marine chemistry and Environmental Science.
The discipline of Oceanography in Xiamen University has
a long history and is a cradle for Chinese Oceanography. The
Department of Oceanography was established in 1946 and the
Institute of Subtropical Oceanography in 1978. The college
was granted the right to confer doctoral degrees in the primary
discipline of Oceanography in 2000. Its research on Marine
Environment began as early as 1950s; The Institute of Environmental
Science was established in 1982 and was upgraded to the Environmental
Science Research Center in 1992. The Key Lab for Marine Environmental
Science under the Ministry of Education, Xiamen University,
came into being in 1995. In 1996, the college and Xiamen Municipal
Government jointly set up the International Training Center
for Coastal Sustainable Development in Xiamen. The Fujian
Province-Ministry of Education Joint Key Lab of Marine Environmental
Science was set up in Xiamen University in 2000 and the Department
of Environmental Science and Engineering was established in
the same year.
The establishment of the College of Oceanography and Environment
of Science in 1996 marked a new leap forward in the disciplines
of Oceanography and of Environmental Science in Xiamen University.
At present, the college has a staff of 116, including 72 teachers,
among whom there are 30 associate professors, 24 professors,
including1 holding Changjiang Scholar Professorship, and 11
doctoral supervisors. The college has 481 students now, including
325 undergraduates, 93 master candidates, 59 doctoral candidates,
4 foreign students and 10 engaged in postdoctoral research
in the post-doctoral station. Now the College of Oceanography
and Environment of Science is trying to bring into full play
the integrated advantages of multi-disciplines and its uniqueness
of being located by the subtropical coast, actively promoting
the relevant basic researches and studies and the development
of applied technology, and exerting efforts to bring its teaching
and research in the field of oceanography and environmental
science into the leading position in China and up to the international
advanced level. Those of outstanding ability who are prepared
to devote themselves to the cause of oceanography and environment
are welcome to the College of Oceanography
and Environment of Science, where we shall work together for
our prosperous future.
