The College of Humanities consists of five departments,
eight research institutes and six research centers. The five
departments include the Departments of Chinese Language and
Literature, History, Philosophy, Journalism and Communication,
and Sociology. The eight research institutes include Institutes
of Research in Chinese Language and Literature, History, Anthropology,
American History, Philosophy, Religion, Communication, and
Ancient Texts. The six research centers cover areas such as
Chinese linguistics, socioeconomic history of China, drama
and film and television, and arts. The College hosts a Anthropology
Museum and the Luxun Museum and publishes a scholarly journal
entitled Research in China's Socioeconomic History. Currently
there are 50 professors in the College, 22 of whom are Ph.D.
advisers, and there are 47 associate professors. Faculty members
with titles of full professor and associate professor and
their equivalents account for 72 percent of the total number
of the College's teaching and research staff.
The various departments of the College of Humanities have
long been established and are grounded in solid foundations.
The college has made remarkable accomplishments in teaching,
research, and scholarly development. At present it hosts one
state key discipline in Chinese economic history, one primary
program accredited to award Ph.D. degrees in history, which
in turn covers eight secondary Ph.D. programs. In addition,
the College hosts three other secondary Ph.D. programs in
Chinese linguistics, drama and traditional opera, and philosophy
of science and technology. Moreover, there are 22 programs
authorized to grant M.A. degrees. There is a national training
and research base for a foundational discipline in liberal
arts-history, and communication is listed as a provincial
key discipline. The College has 10 sequences authorized to
grant B.A. degrees in Chinese language and literature (including
educational and non-educational tracks), Chinese language,
history, archaeology, philosophy, print journalism, broadcast
journalism, advertising, and social work. There are two multi-media
classrooms and several well-equipped teaching laboratories.
The College of Humanities distinguishes herself with achievements
in researches in Chinese socioeconomic history, ancient Chinese
history, the culture of dialects of the southern Fujian Province
and Taiwan Province, modern Chinese history, drama and traditional
operas, philosophy of science and technology, literature and
arts, arts, histories of specific countries, local histories
of Fujian Province and Taiwan Province, Marxist philosophy,
Chinese philosophy, Western philosophy, anthropology, ethnology,
advertising, and social work. Some accomplishments in research
rank among the most advanced across the nation, and have won
international renown. The various departments and institutes
have hosted many international and national academic conferences.
In the past 20 years or so, nearly 200 people-time of faculty
members have lectured abroad and/or participated in other
academic exchanges. During the same period, the College has
also hosted almost 200 visiting scholars and students from
abroad.
