 Brief Introduction

Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by Mr. Tan KahKee, a well-known patriotic overseas Chinese leader. It was the first university in China founded by an overseas Chinese. At present its the only key comprehensive university directly affiliated with the Education Ministry in any of the five Special Economic Zones and is one of China’s higher-level universities designated for the state key construction of the “211 Project” and the “985 Project”. As a result of over 90 years of construction, Xiamen University has become a first-class comprehensive university in China equipped with a strong team of faculty and staff, offering a complete range of programs of education, and exerting extensive international influence.

 

Institutions

With its 27 colleges and 10 graduate schools, Xiamen University has become a comprehensive university offering a fairly complete range of education programs.

 

Faculty

Xiamen University has a strong team of around 5,000 excellent and innovative faculty and staff, including more than 2,678 full-time faculty members, of whom 1,713 are professors and associate professors. In recent years, Xiamen University has attached great importance to introducing high-level scholars to reinforce its faculty and staff and to strengthen the research group. Nowadays, more and more leading professors, eminent scholars and highly potential young researchers have come to work at Xiamen University.

 

Students

The university now has a total of over 40,000 full-time students on campus, including 19,570 undergraduates, 17,490 master students, 2,919 doctoral students, of whom over 2800 students come from outside mainland China. In 2005, Xiamen University received a straight-A score in the undergraduate-level Teaching Appraisal organized by the Ministry of Education.

 

Campuses

This university has an area of 524.5 hectares, located across the Xiamen bay, and set amidst picturesque scenery, with its campus running along the seashore at the foot of mountains. It is popularly acknowledged as one of the most beautiful campuses in China. The university has an excellent environment for teaching, living, and bringing up talents.

Xiang’an Campus of Xiamen University locates in Xiang’an Region of Xiamen, connecting toXiamen Island by an undersea tunnel. The School of Life Sciences, College of Oceanography & Earth Sciences, College of Environment and Ecology, Medical School and some other science graduate schools are located on Xiang’an Campus. Foreign teachers may need to give class on Xiang’an campus for the undergraduate students and postgraduates.

 

School shuttle bus and public bus between Xiang’an Campus and Xiamen city will be available, making the traffic convenient. It takes about one hour to commute between the two campuses.

 

Xiamen University is now making great strides towards its goal of building a high-level university well-known both at home and abroad.

Position I:

English Lecturers For Undergraduate Students (Non-English Majors) at College English Department, College of Foreign Languages and Cultures(CFLC)

Contract Period: Commencing from September/October 2014 to June/July 2015

Work load: 14-16 teaching hours per week and relevant administrative work as well as participation in activities organized by the College and/or the University.

Job Responsibilities:Courses:

A. Oral English for undergraduates:

Course Description: The course is aimed to help students improve their pronunciation and communicate more confidently, to improve their skills in Interpersonal Communication and Interpretive Communication. The teacher should try to create some “real” contexts for the students to practice conveying their sensitivity to others and to the situation, and to help them gain more confidence and enable them to prepare and make a presentation in the work-place or in an academic environment.

B. Other courses proposed by the applicants (subject to approval of the employer) (selective courses)

Courses include but are not limited to language and cultural studies of the English-speaking countries.

Teaching Location: Xiamen Campus and Xiang’an Campus.

Qualification Requirements : Native English speaker with at least a MA degree, two years of formal teaching experience and professional, wholehearted commitment to teaching

Position II:

English Lecturers for Graduate Students (Non-English Majors, Master & Ph.D. Programs) at the College English Department of College of Foreign Languages and Cultures (CFLC)

Contract Period:

Commencing from September 2014 to June/July 2015

Work load:

12-14 teaching hours per week, student homework and exam responsibilities; relevant administrative work as well as participation in activities organized by the College and/or the University.

Job Responsibilities:

Applicants need to be able to teach at least one of the following courses independently:

A. Academic English

B. Academic Writing

C. Successful Practical Writing

D. Effective Presentations

E. Writing for Exams

F. English language and cultural studies

G. Academic Speaking Skills

H. Effective Pronunciation

I. IELTS English (Academic Module)

J. Other courses proposed by the applicants (subject to approval of the employer).

Teaching Location:

Xiamen Campus and Xiang’an Campus.

Qualification Requirements:

Native English speaker with at least a Master's degree and two years of formal teaching experience and professional; wholehearted commitment to teaching; proof of subject matter competency for the course they wish to teach.

Position III:

English Lecturers For English Major Students at English Department, CFLC, Xiamen University

Contract Period:

Commencing from September 2014 to June/July 2015

Work load:

12-14 teaching hours per week, student homework and exam responsibilities; relevant administrative work as well as participation in activities organized by the College and/or the University.

Qualification Requirements:

Native English speakers with at least a MA degree, two years of formal teaching experience and professional, wholehearted commitment to teaching; willingness to cooperate with colleagues and departmental leaders is of utmost importance.

Applicants are supposed to and able to teach various English courses (listed below) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in accordance with the departmental teaching arrangements though it is understood that most of the time the applicants will be reasonably assigned to an appropriate teaching position for the courses that fall within their academic interests.

German/Russian/French Teacherat CFLC, Xiamen University

Contract Period: Commencing from September 2014 to July 2015.

Work load: 12-14 teaching hours per week, student’s homework and exam responsibilities, relevant administrative work as well as participation in events of the department, college and university.

Qualification Requirements: Native speaker of German/Russian/French with at least a Master's degree and two years of teaching experience and professional, wholehearted commitment to teaching.

Payment Standards for All Positions:

Basic Salary:

5500/6000/6500 for MA degree holder, 6000/6500/7000 for doctoral degree holder, depending on years of teaching experience.

Housing Allowance: RMB1500 per month, Two weeks of temporary stay in the Guesthouse on the main campus can be offered for free to new teachers upon first arrival if needed.

Performance Allowance: RMB500 per month, depending on the teacher’s performance of the previous month.

Lunch Allowance: If you have full attendance in the pervious month, you’ll be offered RMB440/month the next month, but it’s not available for March and September, which is usually vacation.

Airfare: For one school year contract, it is RMB8000 (before tax) deposited all together with basic salary and housing allowance; For one semester contract, it is up to RMB4000.

Other WelfareFree medical check once per year; no fees for application for Foreign Expert Certificate and Residence Permit; parties for all foreign teachers in major holidays; a possible free trip for all foreign teachers.
