Faculty Positions in Department of Geological Oceanography

The Xiamen University (XMU) located in Xiamen in southern China has established a new Department of Geological Oceanography as part of the College of Ocean and Earth Sciences (http://coe.xmu.edu.cn/) that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. The college is one of the top oceanography programs in China, and recently moved into new research and teaching facilities. We are also building a 3600-ton (78 m) research vessel and a marine station for cutting-edge education and research in oceanography. XMU envisions the development of a world-class program in Geological Oceanography with focus on interdisciplinary studies of sedimentary processes and the sedimentary record in Chinas unique marginal seas.

Head of the department

We are seeking applications from international scientists for the position of the head of the department. The search will remain open until the position is filled.

Qualifications:

Proven records of excellence are expected in research, teaching, and academic leadership of geological oceanography and related fields with international recognition. The candidate may be a specialist in any field related to geological oceanography, including (but not exclusively): sedimentology, sedimentary geochemistry, sediment transport, seismic stratigraphy, sediment acoustics, geotechnology, remote sensing, and numerical modeling of sediment transport and sedimentation. We seek applicants to work with colleagues from other oceanographic disciplines and to build and lead the department to become an internationally recognized research and education program.

Duties:

The head of the department is expected to work with an Advisory Committee that consists of international experts for the further development of the department in recruiting of faculty and students, curricular design and implementation, and research capabilities.

Faculty members

We are seeking applications from international scientists for up to 15 faculty positions. The search will remain open until positions are filled.

Qualifications:

Has a doctoral degree in any field related to geological oceanography, and may be a specialist in any field related to geological oceanography, including (but not exclusively): sedimentology, sedimentary geochemistry, sediment transport, seismic stratigraphy, sediment acoustics, geotechnology, remote sensing, and numerical modeling of sediment transport and sedimentation. We seek applicants who can work across disciplinary boundaries and are team workers. The rank of the appointment will be commensurate with qualification and experience.

Duties:

To teach undergraduate and graduate courses in a full English or bi-lingual capacity; seek university and outside funding to establish their own research laboratories and facilities and build a research program of global interests; and participate in research cruises.

Compensation:

In conjunction with the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (http://mel.xmu.edu.cn/englishweb/index.asp), XMU offers state-of-the-art instrumentation and internationally competitive packages for qualified candidates. The generous compensation package will be commensurate with qualification, experience, and reputation on an individual basis. It generally includes health insurance and pension plans, moving and settling allowance, housing, extra compensation in addition to the annual salary, and start-up funds, etc.
